Inside this unusually long shop there are places to lounge, drink coffee and chat. Then the walls are set up to look like a mock German village and the restaurant would be the alley; a chick would say that'd be cute. You get the idea. Their sandwiches and their desserts are great for lunch. I go with the New Ulm (I choose Turkey instead of Roast Beef) and ask for it nicely grilled with their homemade kettle chips. Also, of note are their soups like Tomato Basil and Unstuffed Pepper. The staff is the same friendly guy and girl with glasses often and they rock. 6 or 7 bucks for a nice cozy lunch that doesn't necessarily involve thin fried pork, a rarity in the proximity. A good tip is to postpone lunch until after 1 for much less of a line.

Great tiramisu, Carbonara and Creme Brûlée. The Espresso drinks are not strong enough for my tastes however. Huge ceilings and a ton of space.

(Now changed to Lola's) Not only is this a great hangout place for people of all ages, but it's pretty much the only place that has a classy and community feel in New Ulm. Because it is one of the only non-chain establishments in the town, it gives a nice break from what can be mundane and generic in contemporary small town America. Aside from the big-city, small intimate cafe feel of Lola's, the waitstaff is more than amazing at filling your crafty drink order, serving you a fresh, yet sinful desert or pastry, or making you an entree with ingredients that can't be found unless you venture to the culinary capitals of Minneapolis and St. Paul. So if you're looking for something other than Taco John's, Dairy Queen, Perkins, or the Ulmer Cafe, certainly venture here. It's a great place just for affordable coffee/tea time with friends, a quick more wholesome/hearty take-out, or a lazy lunch afternoon with friends.

This is a very nice place and a great discovery for someone making a short visit to town. I really like New Ulm and this was a great place to relax and have a very good meal and get a little feel for the community. Plus the food was terrific. Hope that it will still be there the next time I come around.

As a native New Ulmite, this was my go-to spot with friends for coffee and hanging out on a late night. It was the only place in town (aside from Perkins, which, gross.) that was open past 9pm where we could just sit in the plush chairs and talk while we enjoyed some delicious baked goods and sandwiches. Naturally, I was devastated when I was told that they had closed last year. However, they have recently reopened under new ownership (in fact, I am sitting here right now taking advantage of the free wi-fi)! I was a little skeptical at first because I was afraid the place would lose its laid-back and calming atmosphere or the food wouldn't be as yummy. The food is different, as it is now "Lola's Larkspur Market" and offers Italian sandwiches and pastas, but it is just as delicious. I just enjoyed a muffaletta sandwich that was delightfully warmed and tasty, along with a chai latte. The service remains friendly, the atmosphere inviting, and the amazing baked goods are still here. Its a great spacious dining area and perfect for a large group of friends or someone like me, who doesn't have wireless in her parent's house over spring break and needs to find it elsewhere. I am so happy this place has reopened without losing any of what people loved about it before and in fact improving upon the menu. The only downside? They close at 7pm now. At least now I'm old enough to go to the bars.

Free wifi, great coffee, fresh and excellent food, and great service. This sunlit, classic coffee shop has everything I need when having to kill lots of time in small town America. Make it your first destination when you arrive in New Ulm.

In New Ulm for a hockey tournament and decided to stop in here for a quick bite in between games. I had the mushroom chicken penne and it was quite good! Staff was very friendly and also recommended the raspberry tea. Perfect lunch destination!

Impeccable customer service! We always stop from out of state for their delicious Special K bars. On our recent trip they were out. They actually made a batch while we were eating our lunch, and packaged them up to go for us. Great food and atmosphere. If you haven't tried Lola's, you are definitely missing out.

Atmosphere: excellent Food: above average (for my kids and I)- my wife would rate her salad at a .5 star. Extremely salty. Would have given an overall 4 stars if she had liked her asian chicken salad.

This place is a hidden gem. We were camping at a local state park, ventured into New Ulm looking for lunch and a laundromat, both of which were found blocks from each other. The outside of Lola is cute as a bug and the inside is surprisingly HUGE. We were ravenous, and everything on the menu looked amazing. We decided on the Roast Beef Po' Boy which is described as slow cooked beef with grilled onions, roasted tomato & horseradish cream on baguette and the Chicken Torta which is adobo roast chicken, guacamole, roast tomato, pickled jalapeños, black bean corn salsa & chili-lime crema on ciabatta. The boyfriend got chips with the po' boy and I upgraded to rosemary fries. The roast beef po' boy looked sorta wimpy on delivery, but was pack full of flavor. He shared two or three bites of it with me and I was THISCLOSE to ordering another one after finishing my chicken torta. It was banging. My chicken torta was also amazing and I loved every bite of it. Rosemary fries were crispy and delicious and came with a yummy lemon aioli. I want to go back and try all the things, it was just that fabulous!

A nice little discovery in a nice little town. On the hunt for coffee while traveling through Minneapolis, Yelp reviews brought me here. The route we took, there weren't many choices, so glad that the choice offered was a good one. Great spot, huge footprint for a coffee shop. That said, they are more than that with a tasty looking menu. I only tried the coffee, Americano on day one, drip on day two. Both were very good. Great little lunch menu with sandwiches, salads, pasta and flatbreads. Had I been there for lunch the chicken torta and pork bahn mi both looked like they were worth trying. Nice waitstaff, clean and cozy atmosphere. Worth a stop if in the neighborhood.

Really liked this place. Food was great. Atmosphere was welcoming. Staff, friendly. I had the Mac n cheese w/o onions and was fantastic. I also had the chicken wild rice soup. My wife had a pasta with fennel sausage and red wine and said the two paired lovely. They didn't have problems with our 2 month old and us having to bounce her around. Would totally recommend this place.

Great atmosphere in both the inside and patio areas, fresh food, good balance of American and European flavors. They have live music some evenings. One of my favorite places when I come to town for work.

This review is a little incomplete, because we merely stopped in for espresso...but wow...what a cool place. Unassuming on the outside, but huge and full of atmosphere inside. Local beers, nice menu, Italian decor, high ceilings, fine looking desserts. Looks like a great place to hang out, relax, and converse. If that's your thing.

Are you in New Ulm and looking for lunch, sandwiches, dinner, or maybe coffee and art? Either way you are in luck, Larkspur can meet your needs. In the same stroll through downtown mentioned in my other New Ulm review, we stopped at Larkspur. The market had hte highest Yelp review for the type of restaurant we were looking for. The front section is a restaurant. The bare brick walls are exposed, there are nice tables, decorations, and lighting. While I didn't eat in this part I assume it is where you would go for a sit down meal with wait staff. If you continue through Larkspur the middle section is a counter with a large meal selection with pasta, soup, and salads. Also, there are coffee, tea and baked goods available. We ordered lunch, I got the Cuban, and continued on to the back area which is set up like a fancy coffee shop. In the back there are some rough hew tables and chairs. The walls are white and covered with art from floor to ceiling. We were given a number, sat and chatted until the food was delivered in a few minutes. This section of the restaurant has more of a coffee house vibe and you are expected to buss your own dishes. Overall the food was good and the atmosphere pleasant.

Ate here for lunch after visiting Schell's Brewery. The decor is clean and fairly modern. My wife and I both had pasta. The Smoked Gouda Mac had plenty of cheese but was light on bacon. The sausage arrabiatta had decent flavor but was nothing special. The big problem we both had was that we ordered pour-over coffee. When it was brought to our table, we found out they were only making pour-over with flavored coffee. The great thing about pour-over is that it does a better job of delivering all the different flavors sealed in the beans from the roast. When you do it with flavored coffee, it still just tastes like chemical flavor and coffee mixed together. I can't think of any other coffee place that's used flavored coffee for pour-over. To the restaurant's credit, we were allowed to switch our drink order at no charge, but the fact that they used solely flavored coffee that day for pour-over was a big drawback for us.

My original plan was to grab Subway for lunch, but the meanderer in me led me to downtown New Ulm, where I drove by this American bistro. I popped in for lunch here instead. Lola's offers a wide array of salads, sandwiches, and some hot appetizers, along with your coffee shop drinks and pastries. My turtle drink was tasty, while the caramel pull-apart pastry (tasted like a cinnamon roll) was a little stale. I'm sure it was baked fresh some day. The Cuban sandwich called to me, and I enjoyed it, though it was a little heavy handed on the raw red onions. I'm sure I will be back, as this is one of the cuter and quainter places in town, from what I gathered.

We were headed to Jeffers on our MN adventure day, and we approached New Ulm and decided it was time to stop for lunch. We didn't have high hopes for this tiny town. Thought for sure we'd end up at Subway or a greasy spoon. I was so happy when we happened upon this cute bistro that seemed to be on a level all it's own in this tiny, quiet town. We got the turkey and gouda (I think?) sandwich which was served on extremely delicious focaccia bread. Tons of flavor packed into this sandwich. We also shared the bruschetta, it was a bit heavy on the balsamic, but otherwise tasty. We enjoyed our lunch on their sunny outdoor patio area which was peaceful and pretty. They have the patio lined with planters filled with fresh herbs, which I would hope they are using in their food. Such a neat idea! Glad to know this place is here and looking forward to stopping in next time we are in the area.

It always amazes me that Yelpers will give a glowing review and only 4 stars. What did you knock the star for? That said.....Lola's was a home run for us. The bruschetta was served on homemade toast, which was perfect contrast of crisp and tender. As any bread baker will tell you it can be hard to achieve this feat and Lola has done so. I shared a cup of roasted red pepper soup with hubby...or rather we battled for it. Add lobster and you would have a bisque. Very good! I then waded into the amazing chicken pot pie. Creamy sauce and wonderful chunks of chicken and veggies. Hubby spoke favorably of roast beef melt with provolone cheese. We perused the breakfast menu and would love to have breakfast here someday and try the huevos rancheros and maybe oatmeal brûlé. Lola's is located downtown in really cool old building. Service was great.

I had the cubano. Omg so good. This is the only place you should eat in town. Just passing through but I'm sure I'll be coming back for dinner.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
